San Deigo’s annual Comic-Con is an intense celebration of all things stage, screen, and page, and the premiere destination for cosplay, pop culture, celebrities, and nerdy breaking news. Getting dolled up in homage to your favorite hero is its own undertaking, but I wondered what the layman ladies would be wearing to wow, without a costume, while braving the sweatering SoCal afternoons, chilly evenings, oceanside humidity, and hours of wading through crowds in the streets of the Gaslamp District.
Take a cue from this year’s most buzzed about beauties. The Guardians of the Galaxy goddesss Zoe Saldana donned a much dished-about denim blue jumpsuit from Balmain’s resort 2014 collection. Appearing for the The Hunger Games panel, J-Law shined in Proenza Schouler Resort 2014, with a bold black and white crop top and a hot high-waisted asymmetrical skirt in white, and balanced the look with summery swept up hair. Ender’s Game star Hailee Steinfeld was a beauty superhero with both a kitchy comic book themed pop-art manicure and all eyes on her Kenzo eyeball dress. While Jane Levy’s makeup artist Jamie Greenberg says he rocked retro glam on the actress for the Evil Dead Blu-Ray party, “We went for a modern throw-back look, inspired by a mix between Bridget Bardot and Ann Margaret.
Though vastly different from one another, each of these four looks shares elegance in their simplicity. Though we know a team of top-notch makeup artists and stylists sweats the details so the stars don’t have to, the common denominator seems to be a bold style that feels easy. None of these gals’ hair is too glossy or overdone, jewelry and accessories were sparce if used at all, makeup is lowkey, and each star’s ensemble seems comfortable and right for her. It was tempting to feel intimidated by not staggering around in high heels, but it’s best to leave the costumes to the cosplayers and instead relax in a simple style that suits your personality and passions. — Casandra Armour
