Crème de la Crop: Transition Crop Tops to Fall

Summer 2013 has been good for staycations, lavender infused champagne at the beach, and never ending sunsets.

And as it draws to an end and these months of itty bitty bikinis and sheer dresses have you longing for chunky knit scarves, cashmere sweaters, and Pantone fall palettes (ay, the grass is always greener), there is one summer trend you can easily transition to fall: the crop top. You worked hard for those abs, not need to bundle them in layers quite yet.

Monochrome White

The old rule is just that–dated. Wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion standard at this point. Take cues from Vanessa Hudgens and Amber Heard, who both pair a white crop with a more sophisticated and feminine bottom, than say a pair of cut-offs (we’re looking at you, Miley).

Rightly Proportioned

Navy, black and white (or in Brooklyn Decker’s case, pale pink) never go out of style, and if you want to look like an editor, not like you need an edit, look to style sirens like Rooney Mara and Lily Collins and pair a crop with a pencil skirt and a lady-like heel. If the the shirt is above your belly button, the skirt should hit the knee.

Matching Prints

Opt for matching prints that showcase fall colors rather than too much skin. Just because you’ve opted for the crop, doesn’t mean belly button required. A sliver is more than enough. For runway inspiration think Dries Van Noten’s and Marni’s whimsical patterns. Olivia Munn and Alison Brie have it right.
