Isn’t fall everyone’s favorite season for dressing? The layers, the colors, the it’s-not-yet-winter crisp. This fall look to every day pieces (many which are likely already hanging in your closet) and maximize your outfit from there.
Button Up Before You Have to Bundle
We love model and DJ Atlanta de Cadenet’s simple, sophisticated take on staples that never go out of style. Update your denim button-down and black cropped jeans with with graphic shoes (think Prada-inspired woven details) and a closed top button. It’s a tiny change that requires no dollars.
Make Your Sweatshirt High Fashion
No longer relegated to campus co-eds, Givenchy’s panther sweatshirt from Fall 2011 was one of the first to elevate the casual style. This Fall 2013 they layered sweatshirts over sheers, leaving no doubt that sweatshirts, reborn on many a runway to mother high fashion, have taken to the streets. For fall, pair your favorite sweatshirt (get creative with leopard or camo) with leather bottoms or skinny black pants and pumps. It’s an easy way to take your outfit from day to dusk.
Swap Sneakers for Flats
Summer gave every gal’s arch a break with a wave of sneaker style. Come this fall however, swap the kicks for a more polished look (oxfords, brogues, d’Orsay flats). And say buh-bye to the sneaker wedge, but hold onto your Birk-inspired sandals for one more hippie-minute.
Not to be confused with an “It” bag that can date your look. A statement bag should be season-less. (You don’t really want to look like everyone else anyway.) While a statement purse may not be in your closet yet, look to sites like The Real Real, which offers amazing deals on purses you thought you’d never be able to afford. We’re talking YSL, Céline, and Bottega Veneta for well under retail, but in pristine condition. Even the simplest all black outfit can send others into fits of envy with the right purse. Remember: you don’t have to go all Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreambag. An arresting orange will do the trick, and is an easy way for a more conservative dresser to get in on the fall candy-colored coat trend.
Leather is Here to Stay
We tend to look to Ms. Huntington-Whiteley any time we need a quick tutorial on simple, on-point style. The girl always gets it right, and her blue-black leather and silk combo is no exception. This fall, continue to rock the leathers you’ve come to love (get excited for the leather pants you’ve been waiting to bust back out) with navy blues. Camille Over the Rainbow does it too. Come cooler temperatures wear with a cozy and loose turtleneck.
