BECAUSE great movies about smart, funny, tragic, strange, complex, complicated women shouldn’t be kept to just International Women’s Day!

Director Liz Garbus was nominated for an Academy Award for this film about troubled music legend Nina Simone -- rightfully so, too. Although it lost to Amy – a doc about Amy Winehouse, another troubled music legend – this Netflix documentary is the superior film. Garbus is far more interested in the woman behind the myth, far more empathetic, and far more engrossed in her many facets. There is no pedestal for Miss Simone. The film clearly admits her faults, but simultaneously celebrates them as part of what made her so unique and strong, allowing viewers to digest the lyrics and the music that made her who she was. What Happened, Miss Simone? is streaming on Netflix.
